Next Saturday, February 17, at 7 pm, I’ll perform an intimate Soirée-style concert for a fundraiser for Project 88 Music Academy (where I’ve been teaching for the past two years.)
The concert takes place in the home of Project 88’s musical director, Élider Dipaula, in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. The setting offers a chance to hear me do my thing close up.
And what thing will I be doing?
Actually, two things:
Five songs by Duke Ellington: I’ve been playing (and recording) Duke’s music for more than four decades, and to say that my renditions are, um, different would be an understatement.
The Improvised Sonata: I’ve been experimenting with this for years and am finally ready to unveil it. It’s a complete four-movement piano sonata made up on the spot. What could go wrong? Nothing! As I said, I’ve been preparing for the unprepared for years…
I’ll share some examples of both before the show if I have time.
